December 2011
Dear Brother Knights,
Just last month, I was in Nashville with the State Chaplains and State Deputies from across the country. Bishop William Lori, Bridgeport, CT, addressed us and asked us if we could begin a new initiative within our local councils. That initiative is a focus on the spiritual component of the Knights.
As a priest, I can say that I have received a great deal of support from Knights. Before I was a priest, I think that I can say that I gave support to priests and the Church as a Knight. That being said, I am not sure if I could say that my experience with the Knights has been a large part of my spiritual life. It has certainly been a part of my Church life and part of my social life. I imagine that many of us can say the same thing.
Over the course of the next year, I would like to take the opportunity in the Courier and online each month at the "Chaplain's Corner" to write to council chaplains and to council members. I hope that this can be a practical resource for bringing prayer to the forefront of our work as Knights.
This month, my practical suggestion to chaplains is that you attend your council meeting and discuss this new initiative, trying to answer the question, "How can we make the spiritual life of the Knights of Columbus as important as our works of charity?" For council members, my practical suggestion is that you invite your chaplains and ask them to help you in this task.
Have a blessed Advent.
Fraternally,
Fr. Scott Hastings
State Chaplain
