There exists an emergency situation with only 38% of Americans planning to donate to charities this Christmas Season and during the winter months. This is down drastically from 2008. Rumors of bread lines popping up are circulating.
Many councils across the state already have many programs in place to assist families in need. During this critical time, we are being encouraged to step up existing or create new programs to combat the crisis in our state.
Deacon Ralph Hueser, "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" State Chairman, has recently sent each council information on "Food for Families", the third part of "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" Program from Supreme.
In the packet is a copy of a letter from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson asking for our participation as a state and outlining an incentive where we can receive a portion of $1 million set aside to restock food banks/pantries. It is important for every council to fill out the reporting form in order for the state to be eligible for this incentive.
Deacon Hueser suggests:
- For councils with area food banks, pantries, or soup kitchens, major efforts should be made to donate food/cash from December 1, 2009 through February 25, 2010. Keep a record of donations and hours worked by council members and families. Record them on the reporting form and send to Ray Guggenberger, Executive Secretary.
- For councils without access to area food banks, pantries, or soup kitchens, consider setting one up in conjuction with other area churches, county human needs offices, or any emergency center for food assistance. Dates of service and donations that qualify for appearance on the reporting form are December 1, 2009 through February 25, 2010.
