Dinner at 6:30 PM

Message from the Grand Knight

Brother Knights,
Our Knights & Wives Dinner will be an excellent way to start the New Year 2008. There is much to plan for the future activities of our Council as we prepare for the Jubilee celebration of St. Thomas More parish. Our annual Fish Frys are just around the corner, what a wonderful opportunity to promote our parish and our faith to the Omaha community.
    Peace,
     Mark Brown, GK

Free Throw Contest

Our annual free throw contest will be held at the STM gym on Sunday, January 13, starting around 1:00 PM. Rick West is the chairman of this popular event. We need a few volunteers to help assure the success of this contest.

Blood Drive Results

At our Knights of Columbus blood drive held on December 28 the Red Cross collected nearly 30 pints of blood. This resulted from a most gratifying turnout of donors. Thanks to Paul Reed for heading up this most worthy activity.

Knights & Wives Dinner

Our annual Knights & Wives Dinner will be Tuesday, January 8, at Eddie’s (24th and O St). This dinner replaces our regular monthly meeting in January. A social hour begins at 6:00 PM and dinner will begin around 6:30 PM. Meal price is just $15 per person, payable at the door (make checks payable to “Knights of Columbus”). And remember that if your dues are in by January 8, then your name will be in the dues refund drawing that will be held at the dinner. Dues can even be paid at the dinner. You need not be present at the dinner to win, but why miss out on a great opportunity to eat and socialize with your brother Knights and wives.

One Rose One Life

Our Council will conduct its One Rose, One Life Campaign before and after the week-end Masses on January 19 and 20. Prayer cards will be distributed and money collected to help fund many pro-life programs and organizations in our state. Please volunteer to help with this collection at the Mass you normally attend.

Buck-a-Month

The Buck-a-Month pro-life campaign was announced in last month’s newsletter. Many Knights have already responded generously. Your donation (payable to “NE KC Pro-Life Foundation”) can be mailed to Greg Burrows, 2117 S. 38th Ave, Omaha, NE 68105, or you can place it in an envelope marked “Buck-a-Month” and drop it in the collections basket at St. Thomas More Church. All donations must be in by March 1. A contribution form was included in the December newsletter. If you need a form, check the December newsletter on our Council’s web site or watch for a form in an upcoming STM Sunday bulletin.

Message from the Grand Knight

Brother Knights,
The Knights & Wives Dinner was a wonderful time. A warm thank you to the hospitality of Brother Knight, Eddie Galas and Eddie’s Catering for a wonderful evening. Pray the service of our Council be done with caring hospitality.
    God Bless,
     Mark Brown, GK

Congratulations

Congratulations to Rick West who was honored as our Council’s Knight of the Year at our Knights and Wives Dinner last month. Also, congratulations to Ken Herfel who won the dues refund drawing at the dinner.

Are Your Dues in for 2008?

As of February 4 we have 30 members who still owe dues for 2008. If you are part of this group, please send in your dues as soon as possible. Our Council depends on your dues to help us meet our expenses and to promote numerous charitable endeavors for our Church, school and community. Our Council also incurs extra expenses to send out reminder notices.
If you have any questions about your dues, please contact Greg Burrows at 346-4081 or e-mail at gburrows1@msn.com.

Fish Dinners

Our fish dinners are just around the corner. The first one is coming up on February 15. We are counting on you to join us in helping out with these dinners and also to enjoy a great meal in the company of your Brother Knights, families and fellow parishioners. Subsequent dinners will be held on February 29 and March 14.

Welcome John Pfeiffer

We extend a warm welcome to John Pfeiffer, our Council’s newest Brother Knight. John participated in the first, second and third degree ceremonies at the Cathedral on January 13.

One Rose One Life & Buck-a-Month

In spite of the bitter cold weather our Council did collect $413 during our One Rose One Life weekend. Many thanks to all those who helped with this collection as well as to those who contributed to this worthy cause.
Also worth noting is that our Buck-a-Month campaign has brought in over $750 so far from both members and parishioners. This fund drive continues through the end of February. If you would like to contribute you can find a form in the STM Sunday bulletin.

The Benefit of Brotherhood

The Knights of Columbus insurance program recently passed a major milestone when total insurance in force exceeded $65 billion for the first time. The Order was established in 1882 as a fraternal benefit society, and one of its primary aims was to enable its members to protect their families with life insurance. The amount of Knights of Columbus life insurance in force has doubled in the past decade, from $32.9 billion in 1997 to $65 billion today.
The Knights of Columbus now has over $14 billion in assets and more than 1.8 million life, annuity and long-term care policies in force, and ranks in the Fortune 1000 list of America’s largest companies. It is one of only six insurance companies in North America to receive the highest possible rating from both Standard & Poor’s (AAA) and A.M. Best (A++), and certification of ethical business practices from the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association (IMSA).
Have you taken advantage of our Orders’ greatest fraternal benefit?

Message from Our Chaplain

Brother Knights,
I just want to take time to thank all of my brother Knights, their wives, and our young people for their hard work that goes into the fish dinners, whether it be the preparation, the serving of the meals or the clean up. I am edified by how our local council is able to pull together and put on an event that keeps people coming back time and again. Fr. Bracht Council has been and continues to be a blessing to St. Thomas More Church and its parishioners. May all my brother Knights and their families have a blessed Easter Season.
    God love you,
     Father Ross Burkhalter
     Chaplain Fr. Bracht Council

Fish Dinners -- 2 Down, 1 To Go

Our first two fish dinners for 2008 are now history. We served 474 meals at our first dinner and 456 meals at the second dinner. Numerous satisfied customers have remarked how good the meals are. We hope to see you at our last dinner on March 14.

Buck-a-Month Campaign Results

Thanks to the generosity of both Knights and parishioners we have collected a total of $839.00 in this year’s Buck-a-Month campaign. This money is forwarded to the state pro-life chair-couple, and half of this money will later be returned to our Council to help fund pro-life projects of our own choosing.

Grand Knight Stepping Down

As many of you already know, Mark Brown has found it necessary to step down from his Grand Knight position due to some health issues that he is facing. Please keep him in your prayers. This situation leaves our Council with an important officer vacancy to fill. Is there any Knight in our Council willing to step in and take over for Mark? Please prayerfully think about this.

Time Change for Officers Meeting

The Officers meeting this month will be at 6:30 PM instead of 7:00 PM. Please mark your March calendar with this time change.

Tootsie Roll Campaign

Our Council’s Tootsie Roll collection will be conducted on April 4, 5 and 6 at 50th & G (No Frills Supermarket and Westlake Ace Hardware). Collection times will be from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 4:00 PM on Sunday. Please help if you can by signing up for a 2-hour shift. You can sign up at our March meeting or at our last fish dinner on March 14. Or you can contact Greg Burrows (346-4081 or gburrows1@msn.com) to volunteer.

53, 51, 51, 44, 42, 38, 37

Those aren't this week's winning Powerball numbers...
That isn't your high school locker combination...
It's not an audible at the line of scrimmage from the football season...
    Give up?
Answer: Those are the ages of seven Brother Knights and their family members who died last year.
Look at those numbers again...53, 51, 51, 44, 42, 38, 37. Only two of the seven saw it coming in advance. And at that point, it was too late.
Where do you fall? Scary, huh... Will your family be financially secure if your present age is added to the list? Be certain of your answer. Most folks will tell that 5 - 10x your income is what you should be covered for. Your loved ones depend on it.

Message from the Grand Knight

Brother Knights,
I'mmmm baaaaaaaak!! After a brief caucus, but with no primary, and with no debates, I was elected by majority vote to take over for Mark Brown as your Grand Knight. Mark was doing a great job as Grand Knight but had to step down because of some health issues. Thanks, Mark, for all your good service to our Council. We sincerely appreciate you and will keep you in our prayers. We also want to thank Greg Burrows for all the time and effort he put in to keep things going during Mark's absence, especially in regards to overseeing the fish dinners. Larry & Dona Hoskinson really pitched in to help with the dinners too. I can't name everyone.......you know who you are, so I'll just say "thanks to all those who organized, worked and supported this fund raiser". Everyone said the food was good. We made about $4000 so it is worth all our efforts. We need this money if we want to continue doing nice things for needy people.
In case you missed it, on 3-15-08, Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree of 'Heroic Virtue' on Father McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. This decree significantly advances Father's process towards sainthood and he now has the distinction of "Venerable Servant of God". He will undoubtedly be the first American born priest to be canonized a saint. More information on Fr. McGivney can be found on www.kofc.org. For information regarding the Pope's visit to the USA April 15-20, go to www.papaltrip.org.
A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph & Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A small child replied, "They couldn't get a babysitter". So, now you know "the rest of the story".

Tootsie Roll Campaign

Thanks to all Brother Knights who have volunteered to help with our Council’s Tootsie Roll collection on April 4, 5 and 6 (at No Frills Supermarket and Westlake Ace Hardware at 50th & G). There are still a couple open slots on Friday (April 4). Call Greg Burrows (346-4081) to sign up.

Mothers Day Flower Sale

On Mothers Day weekend we will again be selling roses after Masses to benefit Essential Pregnancy Services. We could use one or two volunteers for each Mass.

Unpaid Dues for 2008

As of March month end we still have 14 council members with unpaid dues for 2008. A reminder billing was included with last month’s newsletter. Have you received your new membership card for 2008? If not, please mail in your dues as soon as possible. Call Greg Burrows (346-4081) if you have any questions. You can of course ignore this reminder if you are an Honorary Life member.

Retirement Income Options

However you wish to structure your personal retirement savings, the Knights of Columbus has a plan for you.
Our flexible premium annuity allows for deposits as your budget allows. You can make contributions as frequently or infrequently as you wish, and you’ll always earn a competitive rate of interest and enjoy the tax-deferred accumulations that an annuity provides.
Another option is our single premium deferred annuity. That’s right — you can obtain a safe, secure retirement annuity for a single deposit. Make one deposit, let it collect interest on a tax-deferred basis until you reach retirement age, then have the opportunity to receive an income off those funds that you can never outlive.
For those who are at or approaching retirement age, our single premium immediate annuity may be for you. With a single deposit, you can immediately begin receiving an income that you can never outlive, while earning a competitive rate of interest on invested funds.
Finally, for those who have more substantial funds to invest in their retirement, the newest addition to our portfolio is our VANTAGE Single Premium Deferred Annuity. With a single deposit of $25,000 or more, you can lock in an interest rate for five full years (tax-deferred, of course), with some very flexible options once the five-year term expires.
As your professional Knights of Columbus agent, I can tell you more, and will be happy to help you begin to secure a comfortable, worry-free retirement. Call me.

Message from the Grand Knight

Brother Knights,
There hasn't been too much going on during April. I guess the main event was preparing an updated slate of officers for the coming year. There were some who requested replacements because they have been serving several years. Fortunately, we had some volunteers and some that I asked said "yes". The slate is not carved in granite so if you'd like to run for a particular position on the slate, please contact me before the May 13th meeting. The formal election of officers will be held at the June meeting.
When you come to the May meeting you may be a prize winner. There will be four drawings at this meeting so your odds of winning are much greater.

"Mr. Clark, I have reviewed this case very carefully" the divorce Court Judge said. "And I've decided to give your wife $775 a week." "That's very fair, your honor," the husband said. "And every now and then I'll try to send her a few bucks myself."

Help Needed for Bazaar Weekend

Our Council will be selling donuts and coffee on Saturday morning,, June 7, for the White Elephant sale. On bazaar Sunday, June 8, we will be serving a chicken dinner in the Social Hall. We need volunteers to help with both events. You can sign up at our May meeting, or contact Greg Burrows (call 346-4081 or e-mail gburrows1@msn.com) to volunteer.

Jeff Mollner, a Brother Knight in our Council, will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, June 7, at 10:00 AM at St. Cecilia Cathedral. There will be a reception afterward in the Cathedral Cultural Center behind the Cathedral. Father Mollner will celebrate Mass on Sunday, June 8, at 2:00 PM at St. James (9025 Larimore Ave). Father Mollner will celebrate the 11:30 AM Mass on Sunday, June 15, at St. Thomas More.

Celebration for Fr. Kizito

On Saturday, May 17, at 6:00 PM there will be a celebration in the Social Hall to recognize Fr. Kizito (our Brother Knight) for his completion of a Master’s Degree from Creighton University.

Tootsie Roll Campaign Results

A big “Thank You” to all the Knights who volunteered to collect donations in our Tootsie Roll Campaign this year. Your great work brought in nearly $1600.

Unpaid Dues for 2008

As of May 3 we still have 12 council members with unpaid dues for 2008. If you are among these members, please send in your dues as soon as possible to assure continuation of your membership benefits.

K of C Long Term Care Insurance
Has Bonus Benefits

Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care clients in the United States, a K of C Care policy brings added value.
That added value is in the form of a service called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network covers: home health care, personal emergency response systems, adult day care, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities and durable medical equipment.
If you haven’t yet spoken with your professional Knights of Columbus agent about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are many decisions to make in choosing a plan – benefit amounts and durations, a facility only plan or one that covers home health care, and the length of the “waiting period” before benefits kick-in are just a few of the items you’ll need to consider.
    Give me a call.

Message from the Grand Knight

We Knights of Council 10184 have received an invitation from the parents of Jeff Mollner to attend his Ordination to the Priesthood on Saturday, June 7th, l0 A.M. at Saint Cecilia Cathedral. (Reception to follow in the Cathedral Cultural Center). We are also invited to his first Mass at St. James Church, 2 P.M. on Sunday, June 8th. Then, on Sunday, June 15th at St. Thomas More he will be celebrating the ll:30 A.M. Mass and the Fourth Degree will attend. Let's all pray for him and show our support by attending these events. After all, he is a Brother Knight and fellow parishioner. God bless!
If you were not able to attend the graduation party for Fr. Kizito, you really missed a good one. The food was great, Father was pleased and happy, and a good time was had by all. Thanks for all those involved in making this party such a success. Father now has degree in counseling, so you might want to arrange for a visit with him before your next trip to the casino. Our Council gave him a gift of $100.
We had four drawings at the last meeting and four winners: John Pfeiffer, Dave Hayes, George Bayer and Greg Burrows. Each received a package of frozen fish filets.

New Officers To Be Installed
At July Family Potluck

The slate of officers for the new fraternal year which were chosen at our May meeting include Jim Ponec – Grand Knight; Rick West – Deputy G.K.; Tom Walsh – Recorder; Rick Reeder – Treasurer; Pat McNally – Chancellor; Bud Chase – Warden; Jeremy Askren – Inside Guard; Paul Reed – Outside Guard; and George Bayer, Greg Hansen, Al Pfeifer for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Trustees. Priest Appreciation Dinner

The annual Priest Appreciation Dinner at Mount Michael in Elkhorn will be July 28. This Knights-only event is a great opportunity to enjoy a great meal in the company of our priests and brother Knights. Remember that our Council reimburses $10 of the $20 meal price for members who attend.

Help When Help Is Needed

Buying life insurance is something that’s easy to put off until tomorrow. And if your life is as busy as mine, tomorrow can easily become next week, next month or even next year. I’d like to make a personal plea that you not make that mistake.
We all know someone whose health, instantly and seemingly out-of-the-blue, changes. You may think this can’t happen to you. Think again. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
There are more than 1 million Knights of Columbus members who have no life insurance with us. I suspect that, for many of those 1 million members, tomorrow has become next week, next month or next year. Don’t be one of them. Make an appointment to visit with me. I’ll work with you to put a plan in place that will help your family when that help is most needed. Call today.

Dinner at 6:00 PM
STM Social Hall

Message from the Grand Knight

Guess what!! At the June 10th meeting the election of new officers was held and there were no fights, furies, objections or additional nominees. The slate was voted on and approved as presented. Thank you and good luck to all on this new slate!!
The installation of these new officers will be held on July 8th. Instead of a regular meeting we will have a potluck dinner in our STM social hall at 6 o'clock PM for all Knights and their family members. The Knights will provide the meat and drinks. Our calling tree will be contacting you to confirm how many you will bring so we can plan on how much to buy. The first six officers on the tree will ask members to bring a salad or veggies. The rest of you will be asked to bring desserts. Please plan to attend.....you will have a very good meal and we won't keep you too long.
Thanks to all who attended Fr. Jeff Mollner's Mass and reception at STM Sunday, June 15th. It meant a lot to him and with the 4th Degree there, it was very impressive. Thanks to the 4th Degree members who took time away from Father's Day to honor Fr. Mollner.
JEREMY ASKREN.... Your name was drawn at the meeting to be awarded a cash prize. However, since you were not there, your cash prize will be added to the drawing at the Pot Luck Dinner.

The nurse asked one of our Knights, recovering from surgery, how is he feeling. "I'm O.K., but I really didn't like the four-letter word the doctor used in surgery," he answered. "What did he say?" asked the nurse. "OOPS".

Priest Appreciation Dinner

The annual Priest Appreciation Dinner at Mount Michael in Elkhorn is July 28. This is a Knights-only event. Our Council reimburses $10 of the $20 meal price for members who attend. You can pay $20 at Mount Michael and be reimbursed later, or you can pre-pay just $10 at our Family Potluck dinner. Sign up at our Family Potluck or let Jim Ponec or Greg Burrows know if you plan to attend so that we can turn in the names of attendees. If you would like to car pool to the dinner, plan to meet on the STM parking lot by 5:15 PM.

Blood Drive Coming in August

Our Council will once again be hosting the Red Cross Bloodmobile on Monday, August 11, here at St. Thomas More from 2:00 PM to 6:15 PM. Contact Paul Reed (554-1519) if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions.

Dividend Can Enhance Your Coverage

There’s a simple – and painless – way to increase the amount of your permanent life insurance coverage. How? Simply use your policy dividend to purchase paid-up additions. When you choose this dividend option, your dividend becomes a single premium that purchases additional insurance on your life. How much depends on your age: A $500 dividend will buy more insurance if you’re 25 than if you’re 50.
Over time, the increase in your policy’s face value – the amount you’re insured for – can increase substantially. What’s more, your paid-up additions build cash value and are eligible to receive dividends, beyond that of the base policy and with no current tax liability. (Remember that dividends are not guaranteed.)
Regardless of your current health, paid-up additions are purchased at a standard rate. An additional note - at any time while your policy is in effect, you can change the way your dividends are paid to you. The other dividend options are:
* Leaving them on deposit to accumulate interest.
* Taking them as a cash payment.
* Applying your dividend to pay all or part of your premium.
As your field agent, it’s my job to help you to understand the options available to you and to help you to make any changes in your coverage. Just give me a call.

Message from the Grand Knight

Congratulations to the new Council Officers and Directors. Thanks a lot for coming to the pot luck/installation dinner and for bringing the delicious food. About 83 attended and we all had a good time in spite of the hall floor being stripped and the kitchen closed off for renovation. Fr. Jeff received an honorary lifetime membership to the Knights. Our new District Deputy is Dan Sobetski. Welcome Dan. Thanks to Bruno for installing our new council leaders and for all you have done as our past District Deputy. John Pfeiffer won the attendance drawing at the potluck. I HAVE SOMEONE'S PANCAKE TURNER FROM THIS EVENT. CLAIM IT AT NEXT MEETING.
The local Councils were asked to volunteer members to carry the flag and state sign for each of the states participating in the National Veterans Wheelchair Races. Greg Burrows and I were the only ones to represent our Council. Greg carried the sign for Arizona and I carried their flag. We are glad we went because it was very interesting to see and participate with those Vets. We had a good time and even got a free "dinner".
We often get requests to give money to someone's endowment. In your will, trust or laundry list, why not consider leaving a gift of money to our council?? We will do nice things for needy people...that takes money.

If you can help with sales in any way (e.g. selling at the weekend Masses, selling at your place of work, or even just to buy one for yourself) please contact Greg Burrows (346-4081, or e-mail at gburrows1@msn.com) to offer your assistance with this important fund raiser for our Council. On our Council’s web site there is a new icon on the home page to direct you to the Entertainment Book site. There you can order a book for another location, perhaps to use as a gift, and still give our Council credit for the sale.

Meeting Needs

In a study of widows and widowers whose spouses died prematurely (between the ages of 30 and 55), nearly two-thirds reported that the death had a “devastating” or “major” financial impact on their families’ financial security. Even three to five years after the death, about half of the surviving spouses said their families’ financial situation was worse than prior to death.
The findings shed new light on the degree to which people lack adequate life insurance coverage. In 39 percent of the cases studied, the deceased had no life insurance coverage whatsoever. When there was coverage, those who died carried an average of only 2.1 times their annual income in life insurance — clearly not adequate.
The study demonstrates that it is not enough to simply have life insurance. It’s critically important that people have enough life insurance. For instance, in those cases where the deceased had less than three times his or her annual income in coverage, only 35 percent of surviving spouses said the life insurance proceeds were adequate.
By contrast, when the deceased had five times his or her annual income or more, the percentage of surviving spouses who described the proceeds as “adequate” jumps to 75 percent. The Profiles + Forecaster software that Knights of Columbus agents are equipped with allows us to make recommendations based on the needs and goals of each family, which ensures that they have adequate coverage.
The absence of adequate coverage forced many surviving spouses to make hard choices to make ends meet. These range from reducing the family’s discretionary spending to borrowing money from family and friends to taking out loans from the bank or a retirement account. These are precisely the types of outcomes that I can help you avoid.

Message from the Grand Knight

Space is limited this month so my message will be short. For all the Knights who helped care for Fr. Vernon and for all who attended his services and for those who participated in the Holy Rosary we shared with the Legion of Mary, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! A SPECIAL THANKS to the many 4th Degree Knights who elegantly participated at the wake service and at the funeral. You guys are GREAT!! God Bless!! We also received a nice thank you note from Dolores. In your prayers, thank God for giving her the strength and fortitude to care for Father for so many years.

Speaking of helping others, I was just wondering.....if it is true that we here to help others, then what are the others here for?

Pasta Dinner Planned for October 3

Once again, as we did last fall, our Council is planning to serve a delicious pasta dinner. This will be in the STM Social Hall on Friday evening, October 3, beginning at 5:00 PM. We will be looking for your help to make this a success. Plan on attending our September meeting to learn all about it. Meanwhile, tell your family and friends to come and enjoy a great meal on October 3 at St. Thomas More.

Blood Drive Summary

At our blood drive on August 11 the Red Cross collected 28 units of blood from 29 volunteers. A big “Thank You” to Paul Reed for heading up this very successful drive.

Father John Vernon – R.I.P.

In your prayers please remember our Brother Knight and former pastor, Father John Vernon. Father was called to his eternal reward on August 6. Father loved his priesthood and touched many lives during the years of his ministry. He leaves us with a memory of his deep faith in God and his love for the Blessed Mother. May he now rest in peace in his heavenly home.

Corporate Communion

Our fall Corporate Communion will be held on Sunday, October 12th, at the 9:30 AM Mass. After Mass there will be a breakfast in the Social Hall. Please reserve this date for you and your family to attend. We will meet in the school lobby at 9:15 AM and process in as a group to the Mass.

Ministry Fair

St. Thomas More will be hosting a Ministry Fair after the weekend Masses on September 27th and 28th. This will be an opportunity for all parish groups to recruit potential members by setting up a table to represent each of their respective groups. Our Council will be taking advantage of this opportunity to recruit new Knights. If you know of anybody you would like to recruit into our Council, please have him stop by the Knights table at the Ministry Fair and talk to our members.

Entertainment Books

Sales are in progress for the new 2009 edition of the Entertainment Book. As of this writing 18 books have been sold. Thanks to all who have volunteered to help with the sales. Entertainment Books also make great gifts. They can be purchased at the weekend Masses, at the rectory, or by calling Greg Burrows (346-4081).

Life Insurance After Retirement

You’ve worked hard all your life to provide for your family. Did you know that when you retire, you may be losing some or all of your group life insurance coverage? Even if your employer offers extended coverage past retirement, you may not be able to get the level coverage you want or have the flexibility to adjust the coverage to your changing lifestyle. Also, the extended coverage may be expensive since the policy’s premium will be based on your age at retirement rather than your current age. To discuss life insurance coverage that will help take care of your loved ones, call me today!

Message from the Grand Knight

The party's over. We sold about 250 spaghetti dinners. Don't know the profit yet. I was disappointed that more Knights didn't show up with their families, but I know Friday nights are very busy with sports and other activities. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Eddie Galas & Mark Brown for their outstanding help and donations, and to those wonderful knights who set up, served, and stayed for clean up. Thanks also to Ann Ponec, Bill Hower and Theresa Ptacek for their hard work!     I would like all of you come to our CORPORATE COMMUNIOIN this coming Sunday (October 12) at 9:30 Mass. Bring the family and meet in the school lobby at 9:15, please. You will be getting a call to see if you will be coming to the breakfast after this Mass. We have to have a count of attendees so the caterer knows how much food to bring.

Did you read about that butcher that backed into a meat grinder? He got a little behind in his work.
A sign on the lawn of a re-hab center said, "Keep off the grass."
     Jim Ponec, GK

Thank You from Dale Widhalm

I want to thank all of my Brother Knights for all their help on September 11 at the Eucharistic Adoration dinner. You made it a huge success.

Mass for Deceased Brother Knights

The Father Michael P Dowling Assembly will sponsor a Memorial Mass for deceased Brother Knights from the greater Omaha area at Boys Town’s Dowd Memorial Chapel on Saturday, November 1, at 5:30 PM. All are invited to attend. Two members from our Council have passed away since last year: Father John Vernon and William Heavey.

Corporate Communion

Please plan to attend our fall Corporate Communion which will be held on Sunday, October 12th, at the 9:30 AM Mass. Refer to the Grand Knight’s message for more details.

Entertainment Books / Christmas Cards

Sales of Entertainment Books are still progressing. As of this writing 45 books have been sold. The selling of these books will continue, but now our focus shifts to Christmas Cards. We need volunteers for Christmas Card sales beginning with weekend Masses on October 18 & 19. Please sign up to help with this activity at our Corporate Communion or at our next meeting. You can view samples of the Christmas Cards on the web by clicking on the Christmas Card icon which has now been added to our Council’s home page at www.nebraskakofc.org/kc10184.

Morally Responsible Investing
In-Line with Our Catholic Doctrine

Who are you doing business with? When you purchase life insurance, annuities, or long term care insurance with the Knights of Columbus, you can be rest assured that not only are you doing business with one of the top rated insurance companies in the world, but you are working with a company that is only investing with companies that do not support programs or products that are contrary to our Catholic beliefs.
Not only that, but as a fraternal benefit society, the profits derived from the sale of these products goes to support the Church and charities, making up a good portion of the record 130 million dollars the Knights of Columbus gave to charities last year. Not a bad deal – purchasing products that help assure you and your family’s future all the while knowing that the profits from the company are going to help others.
Call us today and we would be happy to sit down with you to discuss how the Knights of Columbus can be of service to you and your family. Call me today!

Message from the Grand Knight

Brother Knights,
Please welcome our newest Brother Knights, Jeremy Askren and Rick Reeder. We are blessed to have two fine gentlemen who joined our brotherhood through the efforts of the St. Thomas More RCIA program. Let us give thanks for the fruits of the RCIA ministry and pray for the future harvest of this shining example of service to the Church.
And we also extend a warm welcome to Brother Knight Tom Rouse. Tom transferred into our Council from Holy Cross during our recent Ministry Fair.
    God Bless,
     Mark Brown, GK

Christmas Cards / Entertainment Books

At the weekend Masses on November 10 and 11, and at the parish dinner on November 18, we will be taking orders for Christmas Cards and selling the new “Keep Christ in Christmas” car magnets ($5.00 each). You can visit our Council’s web site ( www.nebraskakofc.org/kc10184) and click on the Christmas Card icon to see samples of the cards and the Nativity magnet. Peddler’s Market

Our Council will, once again, be manning a table at the Peddlers Market. This year the event will be on Thursday, November 29. We plan to sell any of our remaining Entertainment Books and Christmas Cards. The new Nativity magnets will also be available. And we hope to help the parish by selling the STM raffle calendars as well. If you would like to help any time between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM that evening, please call Greg Burrows at 346-4081.

Joy from Children

If you’re like us, you derive great joy from your children. It’s a great feeling when a teacher, coach or fellow parent compliments you on your child.
We all know that raising children these days is no easy task, especially when the values we’re trying to instill in them – concern for others, accepting responsibility for their actions, saving money rather than spending it – seem to run counter to what society is trying to teach them. Yet these are exactly the values that tend to draw compliments from teachers, coaches and fellow parents.
We also know that the best way to teach is by example. If you carry enough life insurance to protect your family - and if you share with those of your children old enough to understand why that’s important, you’re exhibiting and imparting many of the values you hope your children will absorb.
You’ll show them by example that you love them and are concerned about their welfare. You’ll show them that you take your responsibility to provide for your family seriously, and that you want to make sure that they’re provided for even if you’re not around. And you’ll show them that investing money in your life insurance protection is more important than the new set of golf clubs you might want, the newest and best home theater system you’ve had your eye on, or whatever else you might be sacrificing to pay the premiums.
Sure, they’ll probably roll their eyes at you as you’re explaining this, and they’ll certainly moan and groan if they can’t get the newest CD, video game or piece of clothing. But they learn from what you do – just like they learn from what you don’t do. What lessons do you want to teach them?
I want to meet with you to review your existing coverage. Based upon that review, and on the comprehensive needs analysis that I’ll perform, free of charge, I’ll be able to put a plan in place that will meet your needs, goals and budget. Give me a call.

Message from the Grand Knight

Brother Knights,
Our meeting this month shall be a casual affair. Let’s share our ideas on service to our parish and Church over pizza and beverages. Let us pray to “Keep Christ in Christmas” in our personal lives through this Advent season.
    Peace to all,
     Mark Brown, GK

Buck-a-Month

If you would like to make a donation to the Buck-a-Month pro-life program, a form is included with your newsletter this month. The money collected is used to support pro-life efforts of the Knights of Columbus. In addition, half of the funds collected are returned to our Council to use for our own pro-life efforts. The suggested donation is $12 (Buck-a-Month), but any amount is appreciated. If you want your donation to be tax-deductible please make your check payable to “NE KC Pro-Life Foundation” (your check for dues is payable to “Knights of Columbus”).
Your donation can be mailed to Greg Burrows, 2117 S. 38th Ave, Omaha, NE 68105, or you can place it in an envelope marked “Buck-a-Month” and place it in the collections basket at St. Thomas More Church. All donations must be in by March 1.

Knights & Wives Dinner

Our annual Knights & Wives Dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8, at Eddie’s (24th and O St). The fun begins with a social at 6:00 PM and dinner at 6:30 PM. Meal price is $15 per person. This event replaces our regular monthly meeting. We hope you are planning to attend.

Annual Dues for 2008

Billing statements are included with this month’s newsletter (except for those members who have attained Honorary Life status). If your dues are received by the time of our Knights & Wives dinner in January, then your dues could be returned back to you if you are the lucky winner in the dues refund drawing at that dinner.

Blood Drive

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at St. Thomas More on Friday, December 28, from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Blood donations are always important, and during holiday periods it can be especially difficult to find enough donors. Hopefully the Christmas season has you in the “giving” spirit. On blood donor day there will be a need for both donors and for workers. To volunteer, or for more information, you can contact Paul Reed at 554-1519.

Which Is Right for You?

Whole life insurance calls for premiums to be paid for your entire life, or to age 100. You may want to consider a permanent life insurance product – one with guaranteed cash values – that offers a limited period of premium payments. The Knights of Columbus offers three permanent life insurance products for which premiums do not have to be paid for all of life.
“Twenty Pay Life” is exactly as the name suggests – a permanent plan with premiums payable for only 20 years. Another such plan is our “Life Paid Up at 65.” You buy this permanent product and you only pay premiums to age 65. Finally, the ultimate in limited pay is our Single Premium Life product.
I have detailed information on all of these products. At your convenience, I’ll meet with you and your spouse to perform a free, custom-tailored needs analysis, to help determine which of our many life insurance products is right for you and your family.
I wish you a Blessed Christmas Season.
